Fish. Everything today had been about fish. It was understandable, as it was our biggest trade, but sometimes…. It was hard to be concerned about who had rights over a specific fishing spot when there was war on the horizon. And honestly, those white fish were everywhere. Having just settled the dispute I was eager to get a little air. I checked to make sure I wouldn’t be needed anytime soon and then excused myself. Grabbing my small satchel I headed out of the Council building and towards the cliff side.
It was hot again today. This was the kind of day that made me wish I lived Deystem where trees and shade were plentiful. Shielding my eyes from the sun I wandered through the colony and to the sea-side. I picked my way down to the docks, and then walked along the sandy shore to a place where cliff met water. A small green stone caught my eye along the way so I scooped it up, rinsed it in the water, and slipped it into my bag.
My favourite spot to carve was a shelf of rock barely big enough to fit two people that jutted out over the water. It was only a couple feet up the rock wall, but high enough the ocean spray rarely hit me. Eying my usual footholds I realized I should have changed out of my gown, but shrugged it off and gathered the blue material up so I wouldn't ruin it. Carefully, and slowly, I made my way along the small steps nature had carved and settled onto the rock ledge. Thankfully the sun wasn’t in this part of the sky so I got a break from the heat. From here I could watch the bustling docks, and the boats still on the water. It was relaxing to watch the sea birds glide and dive, to hear the water burst against the cliff under me.
I closed my eyes to enjoy it for a moment, to let myself relax. With my deep blue eyes open again I took out my hair tie and let my brown locks whip about. I put the tie away and pulled out the rock I’d just found and the small, sharp metal pick I’d bought at the market this morning. Hopefully I could do more intricate work with this compared to the sharp stone I’d been stuck using for some time. Paused with the pick against the smooth stone I considered what to carve. My mind wandered to a flower, something we didn’t often have here because they had to be brought from Deystem. That would do. I tested the strength of the sharp metal against the cliff rock until I was confident I could control it. Setting the tip to the small stone in my left palm I worked away at carving out petals, listening to the breaking surf beneath me.
